Sustainable Alternative to Agrotextiles by Recycling the Fiber Waste।।

Sustainable Alternative to Agrotextiles by Recycling the Fiber Waste

Mumbai: 2026/11/06: India is known for its fertile agricultural land and also is the main occupation of people even today. Nearly 75% of the total population is engaged in agriculture. Being a tropical country, it comprises of 46 varieties of soil among 60 that exists in the world. India is known for its spices, grapes, apple, tea, cashew, jute, rice, wheat, sugarcane, cotton. Textiles is the second most preferred occupation after agriculture. Technical advancement has made it possible to have a textile application in geo textiles, sport textiles, okeo textiles, agrotextiles. Agrotextiles are the most useful textiles used during the cultivation and harvesting period of a plant. These include mulch mats, shade nets, fishing nets, harvesting nets, weed mats, etc. Synthetic fibers are used for the preparation of woven, knitted and non-woven agrotextiles for varied applications. Polypropylene fibers are most commonly used for agrotextiles which is used everywhere.

Maharashtra ranks among India’s top fruit- and vegetable-producing states, and Nashik stands out as a key agricultural hub. Around 73% of Nashik’s farmers are small or marginal holders, who together cultivate roughly 40% of the district’s farmland. The area grows a wide range of vegetables, including onion, tomato, pea, brinjal, chilli, cabbage, cauliflower, okra, spinach, bottle gourd, cucumber, carrot, Amaranthus, radish, and potato.

In Nashik, many fruits and vegetables are grown and farmers are aware and use natural sustainable agrotextile but are not utilizing. Therefore, a study was conducted in which waste fibers from various textile industries namely cotton, wool, viscose rayon, hemp and natural nettle fibers were collected and a non-woven fabric was developed of 100 %, 50:50 and 70:30 combination. Total 31 non-woven fabrics were developed. Amaranthus viridis was used as a natural finish for improving the performance properties of the fabrics. air permeability, water absorbency, moisture regain capacity, UV absorbency, anti-microbial and biodegradability of the developed composites were carried out. Field trials were conducted on grape farms, tomato and chilli plants to test the fabrics.

These fabrics were tested on grape farms as shade nets and mulches for green chili and tomato plantations from sowing to harvesting. Soil properties before and after laying of the non-woven fabrics was carried out and recorded. The tests were monitored for a period of fifteen days as per the plant growth cycle.

The fabrics were also compared with the existing polypropylene fabrics which were used by the farmers. It was thus seen that the developed amaranthus finish recycled fiber wastes fabrics had good UV properties, biodegradability, air permeability and improved anti-microbial and water absorbency properties. This study also shown the nutrient increase in soil like boron, calcium, magnesium, nitrogen and also maintaining the required pH of every plant.

A patent named Biodegradable Amaranthus-Treated Nonwoven Agrotextile and Method for Preparation Thereof is also granted. Thus, it can be concluded that recycling of textile fibers can be used as an alternative to the synthetic agrotextiles in future. This way the soil fertility will be improved and soil nutrients will be retained for a sustainable future ahead.
