(current
India's FY27 GDP forecast raised to 7% on economic resilience:
Moody's
New
York: 2026/09/20: Moody’s Ratings has raised its forecast for India’s real GDP
growth in fiscal 2026-27 (FY27) to 7 per cent from 6 per cent previously,
citing stronger-than-expected economic momentum and the economy’s resilience to
global shocks linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
India’s
real GDP growth accelerated to 8.2 per cent year on year in the first half of
calendar 2026, compared with 7.3 per cent in calendar 2025. Moody’s attributed
the stronger momentum to robust private consumption, continued gross fixed
capital formation supported by public infrastructure spending, a likely revival
in private investment and sustained strength in the services sector.
Moody’s
said that India is expected to grow faster than other G20 economies and
similarly rated emerging-market sovereigns, according to media reports. It
noted that increased diversification of crude oil import sources, sizeable
foreign exchange reserves and strong domestic demand provide buffers against
external shocks.
However,
the ratings agency warned that elevated energy prices could push average
inflation above its 4.8 per cent FY27 projection if the Middle East conflict
persists. El Niño-related disruptions could also increase food-price pressures,
weighing on private consumption and economic activity.
Higher
energy and fertiliser import costs, weaker external demand and softer
remittance inflows from the Middle East could widen India’s current account
deficit and weigh on growth, Moody’s said.
The
agency expects debt reduction to remain gradual and debt affordability to
remain weaker, reflecting India’s high debt burden and elevated interest costs.
It said the government’s commitment to reducing the central government fiscal
deficit to 4.3 per cent of GDP in FY27 from 4.4 per cent in FY26 has limited
the fiscal response to the Middle East shock.
Moody’s maintained a stable outlook on India’s ‘Baa3’ sovereign rating, citing gradually improving fiscal metrics and resilient growth prospects compared with peers.
