Useful  Verbs  for Everyday Use Series 001

 

1,  abandon verb, noun   १ एबनडोन

1 to leave sb, especially sb you are responsible for, with no intention of returning  1 किसी को छोड़ना, विशेष रूप से जिस के लिए आप जिम्मेदार हैं, लौटने का कोई इरादा नहीं है

 

People often simply abandon their pets when they go abroad. लोग जब विदेश जाते हैं तो  अक्सर अपने पालतू जानवरों को छोड़ देते हैं।

 

The cruel man abandoned his wife and child. क्रूर आदमी ने अपनी पत्नी और बच्चे को त्याग दिया।  

2. abase 2. एबेस

~ oneself ( formal ) humiliate or degrade oneself, so far as to do sth, lower oneself in dignity to the extent of doing sth.  स्वयं (औपचारिक) को अपमानित करना या नीचा दिखाना,  स्वयं को किसी हद तक गरिमा में कम करना।

 

He abased himself by demanding help. उसने मदद की मांग कर खुद का अपमान  कर लिया।

3. abash ३ ऐबाश 

(used in passive only ) cause to feel self conscious or  embarreshed. चौंकना।  दंग रह जाना।

 

The poor man felt/stood  abashed at this display of wealth. धन के इस प्रदर्शन पर गरीब व्यक्ति दंग रह गया गया।

4. abate 4. ऐब

[ intransitive ,  transitive ] ( of winds, storms, flods,pain, etc )  (हवा, तूफान, बाढ़, दर्द, आदि) to make or become less strong थम्‍हना, कमज़ोर पड़ना ।

 

The storm  abated. तूफान थम गया।

 

~ sth  Steps are to be taken to abate pollution. प्रदूषण को कम करने के लिए कदम उठाए जाने हैं।

 

 

5. abbreviate  ५ ऐब्रिविएट

[ usually passive ]  ~ sth (to sth) , to make a word, phrase or name shorter by leaving out letters or using only the first letter of each word , अक्षरों को छोड़कर या प्रत्येक शब्द के केवल पहले अक्षर का उपयोग करके किसी शब्द, वाक्यांश या नाम को छोटा करना, shorten छोटा करना

the Liqid Petroleam Gas is usually abbreviated to LPG.

 

लिक्विड पेट्रोल गैस को आमतौर पर एलपीजी के रूप मे संक्षिप्त किया जाता है।

 

6. abdicate 6. ऐबदीकेट

 

1 [ vi,  vt ] to give up, renounce, a high office, authority or control, responsibility उच्च पद, अधिकार या नियंत्रण, उत्तरदायित्व को त्यागना ; to give up  the  throne, सिंहासन त्यागना

 

He abdicated in favour of his son. उन्होंने अपने बेटे के पक्ष में त्यागपत्र दिया।

7. abduct  ऐबडक्ट

 

~ sb to lead or take sb (esp a woman or child) away illegally, or unlawfully, especially using force or fraud, भगा ले जाना (विशेष रूप से एक महिला या बच्चे को, अवैध रूप से, बल या धोखाधड़ी का उपयोग करके)

kidnap अपहरण करना

 He had abducted the two children.  उसने दो बच्चों का अपहरण कर लिया था।

 

 

8. abet 8. ऐबेट

 

( -tt- ) ~ sb to help sb in doing crime,  or encourage sb to do sth wrong, vice or crime. (-tt-)  किसी को अपराध करने में, या गलत करने में उसकी मदद करना  या अपराध करने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करना।

 

He was abetted in the deception by his father. उसके पिता ने उसे धोखा देने में उकसाया था।

 

 

9. abhor 9. ऐभोर

( -rr- ) ( not used in the progressive tenses )  ~ sth ( formal ) to think of with hatred and disguist;  घृणा के भाव से देखना,   detest;  घृणा करना; to hate sth, किसी चीज से घृणा करना,  especially for moral reasons विशेष रूप से नैतिक कारणों से

detest , घृणा करना,  loathe घृणा करना

 

I abhor smoking. मुझे धूम्रपान से नफरत है।

I abhor cruelty to animals. मुझे जानवरों के प्रति क्रूरता से घृणा है।

 

 

10. abide 10. अबाइड

 

( pt, pp –d, abode)   past tense और past participle के लिए दोनो रूप सही हैं abided, abode  1 [ transitive ] endure, bear;  1 सहना, सहन करना;

How can I abide him? मैं उसको कैसे बर्दास्‍त कर सकता हूं?

 

can't/couldn't abide sb/sth to dislike sb/sth so much that you hate having to be with or deal with them bear , stand sb/sth को इतना नापसंद करना कि आप उनके साथ रहने या उनके साथ व्यवहार करने से नफरत करते हैं।

 

I can't abide him . मैं उस के साथ नहीं रह सकता।

 

2 [ intransitive ] + adv./prep. ( old use or formal ) to rest, remain, stay or live at/ in a place/with sb.  आराम करना,  रहना, एक जगह पर / किसी के साथ।

 

Joy and peace abide together. आनंद और शांति एक साथ रहते हैं।

 

3 ~ by sth ( formal ) ,to accept and act according to a law, an agreement, etc * एक कानून, एक समझौते, आदि का पालन करना

 

I always abide by my decision. मैं हमेशा अपने फैसले का पालन करता हूं।

I abide by what I say. मैं जो कहता हूं उसका मैं पालन करता हूं।

 

 

11. abjure 11. ऐबज्योर

 

~ sth ( formal ) to promise or swear solemnly on oath or in  public to give up as a belief , a right , a evil ways, or a way of behaving,  शपथ लेकर या सार्वजनिक रूप से एक विश्वास, एक अधिकार, एक बुरे तरीके, या व्यवहार करने का एक तरीका, छोड़ने का वादा करना   

renounce त्याग करने का वादा करना या शपथ लेना

He ~ d his religion. उसने अपना धर्म त्‍याग कर दिया।

 

 

12. abol ish 12. ऐबोलिश

 

 ~ sth  to put an end to; to do away with; to officially end a law, a system or an institution * किसी चीज को समाप्त करना; किसी चीज को हटा देना; एक कानून, एक प्रणाली या एक संस्था को आधिकारिक रूप से समाप्त करना

 

This tax should be abolished.

इस टैक्स को खत्म किया जाना चाहिए।

 

13. abominate 13. ऐबॉमिनेट

( not used in the progressive tenses )   ~ sth/sb ( formal ) to detest; घृणा करना; to dislike; नापसंद करना;  to feel hatred or disgust for sth/sb.  किसी व्‍यक्ति या आदमी के प्रति घृणा महसूस करना

 

He abominates wine.

वह शराब से घृणा करता है।

 

 

14. abort 14. ऐबोर्ट

 

1 [ transitive ] ~ sth=

to end a pregnancy early in order to prevent a baby from developing and being born alive; बच्चे को गर्भावस्था में समाप्त करना; to miscarry  to

She aborted the child/pregnancy/foetus. उसने  गर्भपात किया /गर्भावस्था में भ्रूण को गिराया।  

 

2 [ intransitive ] ( technical ) to come to nothing. निष्‍फल होना।     If the wrong password is given the program aborts. यदि गलत पासवर्ड दिया जाता है तो प्रोग्राम निष्‍फल हो जाता है।3 [ intransitive ,  transitive ,  often passive ] to terminate prematurely; समय से पहले समाप्त करना; to end or cause sth to end before it has been completed, especially because it is likely to fail :पूरा होने से पहले समाप्त करना, विशेष रूप से क्योंकि इसके विफल होने की संभावना है:

15. abound 15. ऐबाउंड

[ intransitive ] to have or exist in great numbers or quantities [अकर्मक] बड़ी संख्या या मात्रा में होना

 

Stories about his travels abound. उनकी यात्रा के बारे में कहानियां बहुतायत में हैं।

The lake abound with fish. झील में मछलियों की भरमार है।

Fish abound in the river. नदी में मछलियों की भरमार है।

16. abrade 16. ऐबरेड

~ sth ( technical ) to rub or scrape off the surface of sth, such as rock or skin, and damage it or make it rough ~ sth (तकनीकी) sth की सतह को रगड़ना या खुरचना, जैसे कि चट्टान या त्वचा, और इसे नुकसान पहुँचाना या इसे खुरदरा बनाना

17. abridge 17. संक्षिप्त करना

 

~ sth to make a book, play, etc. shorter by using fewer words or by leaving parts out ( कम शब्दों का उपयोग करके या भागों को छोड़ कर एक किताब, नाटक आदि को छोटा बनाना

 

She has abridged the novel for radio. उसने रेडियो के लिए उपन्यास को संक्षिप्त किया ।

I have a abridged  edition of Mahabharat. मेरे पास महाभारत का एक संक्षिप्त संस्करण है।

 

18. abrogate 18. ऐबरोगेट ~ sth ( technical ) to repeal or annul by authority;  प्राधिकरण द्वारा निरस्त या रद्द करना; to officially end a law, an agreement, etc. . आधिकारिक तौर पर एक कानून, एक समझौते, आदि को समाप्त करना ।

 

The rule has been abrogated by mutual consent.

आपसी सहमति से नियम को निरस्त किया गया है।

 

19. abscond  ऐब्‍सकाउंड  [ intransitive ] 

 

1 ~ (with/from sth) to go away, suddenly, secretly, esp to avoid arrest; भाग जाना, अचानक, गुप्त रूप से, गिरफ्तारी से बचने के लिए; to escape from a place that you are not allowed to leave without permission ऐसी जगह से भागने के लिए जहां आपको बिना अनुमति के जाने की अनुमति नहीं है

 

She absconded from children's home. 

वह बच्चों के घर से फरार हो गई ।

2 ~ (with sth) to leave secretly and take with you sth, especially money, that does not belong to you  चुपके से छोड़ना और अपने साथ कुछ, विशेष रूप से पैसा, जो आपका नहीं है, ले जाना

20. abseil 20. ऐबसील

 

[ intransitive ] ~ (down, off, etc. sth) to go down a steep cliff or rock while attached to a rope, pushing against the slope or rock with your feet  ढलान या चट्टान से रस्सी के सहार नीचे जाना

A climber must know how to abseil. एक पर्वतारोही को पता होना चाहिए कि कैसे उतरना है।
