India sustains growth momentum during Q1 FY27: Finance Ministry
New
Delhi : 2026/07/30: Despite heightened global uncertainty, the Indian economy
sustained growth momentum during the first quarter (Q1) of fiscal 2026-27
(FY27), according to Monthly Economic Review for July by the department of
economic affairs under the Ministry of Finance.
“While
steady domestic demand continues to support growth, some high-frequency
indicators have seen a softening in momentum,” the review document noted.
Industrial
activity improved during Q1 FY27. IIP growth picked up sequentially as well on
a year-on-year (YoY) basis, supported by manufacturing and robust electricity
generation.
Purchasing
managers’ indices also indicated continued expansion in economic activity,
although the pace of expansion varied across sectors. In manufacturing, growth
moderated sequentially due to slower growth in new orders and output, and
cautious business sentiment amid geopolitical uncertainties.
Looking
ahead, resilient domestic demand is expected to continue supporting economic
activity, although renewed geopolitical tensions and commodity price volatility
remain key risks to the outlook, the document noted.
The
index of core industries (ICI) recorded a YoY growth of 5 per cent
(provisional) in June, improving from 3.2 per cent (final) in May this year.
Against
a backdrop of resilient industrial activity and supportive financing
conditions, implementation of key strategic manufacturing initiatives gathered
further momentum during the month.
Inflation
continued its upward trajectory in June, with the consumer price index (CPI)
rising to 4.38 per cent from 3.93 per cent in May, while continuing to remain
within the central bank’s tolerance band of 2-6 per cent. Quarterly retail
inflation too jumped to 3.9 per cent in Q1 FY27 from 2.7 per cent a year
earlier.
India's
trade performance remains resilient. Merchandise export growth reflected
broad-based growth, supported by strong performance across both petroleum and
non-petroleum segments.
