UK's private sector activity outlook improves to -18%, CBI says।।

UK's private sector activity outlook improves to -18%, CBI says

London: 2026/08/01: UK private sector firms expect activity to fall in the three months to October, with the latest Growth Indicator showing a weighted balance of -18 per cent. The The Confederation of the British Industry (CBI) revealed.

The reading matters for apparel, textile and retail supply chains because it keeps the near-term demand signal negative across manufacturing, distribution and services.

The expectations are the least negative since March, just after the outbreak of the Iran conflict, but the latest results extend a period of negative predictions for growth that began in late 2024, the survey from the CBI showed.

Modest falls in activity are expected in business and professional services, at a weighted balance of -14 per cent, and consumer services, also at -14 per cent, alongside a larger expected fall in manufacturing output at -30 per cent. Distribution sales are also expected to decline at -20 per cent, though these are the least pessimistic expectations since August 2025.

The subdued outlook follows a fall in private sector activity in the three months to July, at a weighted balance of -21 per cent, though that was the slowest pace since February, when the balance was -19 per cent, the CBI said in a press release. All sub-sectors reported falling activity.

Alpesh Paleja, deputy chief economist, CBI said: “Businesses are slightly less pessimistic about the outlook than they were a few months ago, but they are far from breathing a sigh of relief. Firms continue to report subdued demand, hesitant customers and weak confidence, while persistent cost pressures are keeping margins squeezed. Renewed tensions in the Middle East have added another headwind that had previously begun to ease. The result is an economy that appears to be finding a floor, but not yet a firm footing.”

Paleja said the persistently negative survey data highlighted the economic challenge facing “the new Prime Minister and his team”. He said recent announcements around support for households and the high street were welcome, but added that lasting growth required making the UK “a better place to invest, hire and scale”, including by cutting the cost of doing business from energy bills and labour costs to tax and planning, speeding up delivery, and creating conditions for private capital to crowd in.

He added: “Fostering conditions that inspire businesses to create jobs and invest is imperative to lowering the cost of living for households, allowing all to benefit from consistent economic gains.”

The CBI said a balance is the weighted percentage of companies reporting an increase minus those reporting a decrease.
